A quick bite to eat is always easy to find, whether it is cold pizza, cereal, or a handful of almonds. But when you are out and about during your busy day, how easily can you find a healthy snack to munch on, instead of those greasy potato chips that are available everywhere. With our fast paced society, snacking has become much more prevalent. Taking the time to sit down and eat a fully prepared meal is too much effort; alternatives like fast or frozen foods, or just snacking, seem like a more logical answer. Although, every day more and more people become conscious about their health and choose to make wiser decisions about their diet.

Why Snack Healthy?

One of the key components to losing weight is a healthy diet. But what some people don’t know is that snacking is extremely beneficial for burning calories. Snacking throughout the day keeps the body constantly metabolizing, thus burning calories and fat. Healthy snacking and exercise can lead to much faster, and enjoyable, weight loss in comparison to starving yourself and over exercise. This is because the body can be tricked into thinking there is not enough food for it to function and it must conserve fat to store energy. Constantly having a small amount of food for the body to metabolize gives it the opportunity to continuously burn calories, because it knows more food (and energy) is coming. But what do you do when you are sitting at work, school, or in another public area, and you want a healthy snack? You’re not going to run to the grocery store, and most business plazas aren’t equipped with a healthy snack store.

The revolution is here: healthy vending machines. Coming to a lobby near you!

What to Expect

The vending machine industry is steering away from the boring, old, black boxes with a coin insert and a few buttons to press. New vending machines are attractive, attention-getting food dispensers, equipped with credit/debit card readers, LCD touchscreens, and power efficient operating systems. They can provide goods such as nutritious energy drinks like Vitamin Water, healthy snacks like Power Bars, and even items like Pop Chips, which are all natural potato chips that aren’t slowly destroying your body (like some others)! Items will never have trouble being dispensed, because sensors and monitors make sure the item is vended before the transaction is processed. The advertisements on top of the machines make the products inside of it known, so the passerby will know exactly what is available. The touch screen not only makes choosing your item easier, it can pull up a description and the facts about the item as well!

Get excited for these new vending machines to be placed in a convenient, accessible area close to where you work and play.

For many women, finding the right amount of protein for their diets can be challenging. Especially if you’re not particularly fond of meat, you prefer to eat vegetarian, or you’re simply tired of the same type of meals week after week.

There’s really no reason to worry about the amount of protein you’re getting, because most Americans actually consume much more protein than their body actual needs. Keep reading for a look at different ways you can add protein to your diet without having to resort to filling your menu plan with animal (meat) protein every day.

Whole grains: Whole grains are a fantastic source of protein. If you’re looking for the number one whole grain, I recommend quinoa. It’s full of essential amino acids, which are necessary for good health. There are other whole grains that are great sources of protein as well. Consider brown rice, barley, flax, and whole grain breads for example. They are also cost-efficient, especially if you buy your whole grains in bulk.

Beans, lentils and legumes: All different types of these are excellent choices for your protein needs. Although the list here is far from complete, these are a few of the options you have when choosing beans for your protein needs. Black beans, split peas, chickpeas, kidney beans, lima beans, navy beans and many more options will all provide more than enough protein for your body’s needs.

Eggs: Eggs can supply you with many vitamins and minerals in addition the the quality protein you receive when eating them. Vitamin A, riboflavin, several of the vitamin Bs, calcium and potassium are the main benefits following the protein value in the natural, single-food source. Eggs are also one of the few foods that naturally contain vitamin D.

Soy and tofu: Soy is such a versatile product you’ll always find different ways to use it in your cooking. Soy is yet another fantastic alternative for assuring you achieve all your protein needs. Whether you choose tofu or other soy products such as soy milk, soy nuts or even soy cheese you can be assured you are definitely receiving appropriate amounts of protein in your diet. And for those of you who are trying to watch what you eat, but still crave some sort of sweet or dessert on occasion, you can even choose soy ice cream.

The bonus with many tofu and soy products is that they are fortified with other nutrients as well. Normally you will find they have additional calcium, vitamin B12 and iron added to them to ensure you get as much health benefit as possible from what you’re eating.

Hemp: Hemp seeds contain all of the essential fatty acids and amino acids your body requires to remain healthy. The seeds can be eaten raw, made into hemp milk (similar to soy milk), used for tea as well as other baking. The leaves can also be used as a part of your salad! Its protein benefits are comparable to other sources such as meat, milk, eggs and soy.

Whey: Whey is what’s left over once milk has been curdled and strained, such as in the process of making cheese. This is another great source of protein, and here’s a little explanation of why it’s one of the most popular choices of supplements to food sources. Whey protein surpasses even the egg white standard (the number one natural source of protein). This means it is even more efficient at being digest and absorbed by your small intestine while still in its original form. As a result of this, it’s thought that the amino acids from whey protein enter the blood stream faster than other sources of protein.

Various protein powders: There are many different protein powders available everywhere from your local health food store to your pharmacy. They are made with dried protein sources such as whey, casein (milk), soy, egg white (albumin) or hemp seeds. They are most often used in meal replacement products such as shakes or bars, and are most often used by body builders. However, they are recommended by certain low-carb diets as an alternative to various meals. These powders are easy to use, as it’s normally just a case of adding water or low-fat milk, stir and drink.

As you get used to the fact that these ‘shakes’ are your meal, you’ll find it easier to be fulfilled with a liquid meal. However it does sometime take some time for your brain (and your stomach) to realize your body is getting all of the nutrition you need, and you may subconciously feel hungry even after using a meal replacement product.

As you can see, you have many choices available in order to ensure you get enough protein in your diet. There’s no need for meal after meal to contain meat, and these choices can help you to achieve a more flexible menu plan while still supplying your body with all of the nutrients it needs to remain healthy.

One concern that you may have when you start a gluten free menu in order to rid yourself of unwanted belly fat or to remove gluten sensitivity symptoms is that following a specialized diet is too expensive. That’s a valid concern. If you’ve been to the grocery store lately you can see that many food costs are on the rise while our income levels are staying, well, level. I’m all for spending the least amount of money you can on food so that you can have the resources for the other important things in your life. However, spending wisely on the right food choices so that you can experience optimal health is not only possible, but crucial to an overall healthy lifestyle.

Let me show you why following a gluten free menu may actually save you some money over what you are eating now.

Many of the foods which contain gluten are packaged and processed. Because they are wheat or grain based they are the types of foods that are easily stored in bulk. This makes them abundant; however, does it make them the best choices for your health?

Back in 1999 the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) estimated that a family of four can eat at home at cost of $95.00 to $185.00 per week. Over ten years later you can still do that. The obstacle that most people have is that there are now so many processed and pre-made food choices and our lives are hectic so it’s easiest reach for those more expensive type of meals that do a little planning and cooking on your own.

I would argue that by cooking a few more meals at home you can have better control over a gluten free menu and a full array of healthy choices. Making your own stir-fry rather than purchasing a ready-made frozen variety allows you to be in control of what goes into your food and what goes into your body. Have you ever really considered the amount of sodium that you are ingesting, cumulatively, over the course of a day?

And don’t let the idea of pre-planning or cooking homemade meals scare you off. It’s amazing how much food you can freeze or store with the help of a vacuum sealer. If you are making one pan of spinach lasagna, why not make two and freeze the second one for later. By removing much of the air during storage you can keep your gluten free menu choices fresh. They will be ready to grab and go, just like the stuff that’s in your grocery freezer aisle; however, you know what’s in your gluten free homemade meal and it’s better for your body.

Just consider this one easy example. If you love to have banana bread at breakfast since you no longer need cereal on your gluten free menu, then you can make several loaves at the same time and freeze what you are not eating immediately for future use. If you purchase over ripe bananas at the store they are usually less expensive and perfect for gluten free banana bread. Once they are baked and cooled, you can wrap them in wax paper and then seal in a storage bag or a vacuum sealer. Later, just pull a loaf from the freezer, defrost and enjoy.

There are also gluten free sources that will sell their selections for your gluten free menu in bulk, thus reducing the cost. Be sure to check out the sources for a great banana bread recipe and ideas on where to buy gluten free food.

Some people have this notion that in order for them to eat healthy meals, they have to fork out a lot of money every time they go grocery shopping. Well, nothing could be farther from the truth. In fact, those foods that are high in salt, sugar and saturated fat content are the ones that cost too much. There are a variety of nutritious foods around that are high in nutrients but are surprisingly cheap. Welcome to the world of low budget nutrition.

Eating healthy on a budget simply means choosing the foods that are very affordable but are jam-packed with nutrients that fight cancer, heart disease and all sorts of degenerative diseases. Low budget nutrition entails you focusing your meal preparations on beans, grains, fruits and vegetables. They are cheap, easy to prepare and full of good nutrition. Beans and legumes, which are great sources of protein, iron and Vitamin B, have been proven to lower your breast cancer and heart disease risk.

Dried black, white or navy beans are the cheapest on the market. To prepare them for cooking the next day, simply soak them in water the night before. They can be cooked with vegetables, just a little bit of meat or make tasty salads, soups and other recipes. Another affordable vegetable which you can buy in bulk are potatoes. They may have been banned from the vocabulary of “healthy foods” but this is largely due to the fact that they are the main ingredient in French fries which is full of salt and saturated fat that clogs arteries. Potatoes are actually good for you as they contain Vitamin C, Vitamin B6 and dietary fiber. The trick is to bake or boil them and not fry them. Another staple of low budget nutrition are grains. Choose whole grains instead of refined ones since the latter has less nutritional value. Full of selenium, manganese and magnesium, brown rice, which is a staple in many Asian countries, is actually quite affordable.

Rice can also just be boiled and be served together with vegetables and soups. Meanwhile, international recipes like Bolognese pasta, Chinese friend rice and Japanese yakisoba can be made using whole wheat. Cabbage, broccoli, cauliflowers, spinach, cabbages, sprouts and other vegetables are quite cheap but chock full of nutrition. Research has shown them to be crucial in the fight against the Big C, especially bladder, colon and prostate cancers. They can be made into salads, served with sauces or dips or turned into green smoothies for a healthy refreshing drink. When going shopping, choose vegetables that are in season. Not only are they cheaper, they also retain the most nutrients.

Eating healthy and nutritious foods need not be expensive. All it takes is simple planning and a little bit of resourcefulness and creativity to shop for foods that don’t make you break the bank. It needs a bit of research, too, so you can learn what natural foods are actually affordable yet are chock full of nutrition. Learn to cook these meals deliciously using herbs and spices as seasonings and you and your family will surely be healthier even on a low food budget.

In this article I’m going to share with you my ultimate superfoods list that will help build immune system strength in your body. I highly recommend against eating a bunch of acai berries because even though they’re a pretty good antioxidant they’re in no way as beneficial as the marketers are claiming. But there are some superfoods out there that will help improve your overall health as well as your immune system so you can better function and fight against diseases. This goes for bad foods as well and anything you put in your body will have an effect whether it’s going to be good for you or bad for you.

When you’re looking for ultimate superfoods I really look for ones that are high in lean protein. Protein will provide the body with many of the nutrients needed to fight viruses and other diseases and if you’re lacking protein than it’s going to be hard to fight off the flu that’s going around. One of my favorite top foods on my superfoods list is turkey and the reason I put it near the top of the list is because it’s loaded with amino acids that will help build your immune system. The reason I chose turkey is because it’s a lean protein and also because it has the right amino acids to specifically build a strong immune system.

Also I’d look to increase your intake of fruits and vegetables and add them to your superfoods list. It’s surprisingly difficult for people to increase their consumption of fruits and vegetables but a lot easier to eat more protein sources. This is probably because they don’t taste nearly as good but the high amount of quality nutrients is going to be well worth it. If it’s too difficult to fully consume the required amount of fruits and vegetables I highly recommend drinking more juice. I’d invest in a juicing machine that will do the whole process for you and instead of eating a bunch of fruits you can instead drink the juice a whole lot faster and easier.

Just by increasing your consumption of proteins, fruits and vegetables you can dramatically increase the health and immune system in the body. Also you have to not eat junk foods because as healthy foods will fight disease the unhealthy foods will also cause you to get sick. This combination of these ultimate superfoods list will dramatically help fight against viruses and bacteria and as you build immune system strength you’ll be living a healthier and happier life.

You just swam 100 laps, pressed your barbell in a Les Mills class over your head. Ride your bike, Run 10K, or hopped around with Tony Horton in P90X, or bench-pressed a ton of weight like the incredible Hulk. Whatever you did to get your heart rate going and sweat pouring down your forehead, you need to have the proper nutrition to help you recover from your strenuous workout.

So if you notice that after a running race especially a marathon, you will see tables covered with cups of water. Well, it’s important to rehydrate to replace any fluids lost through urination and mostly the flop sweat. However don’t wait until the end of the workout to drink your water, you should also continue to hydrate during your workout also.

Now that you are not thirsty, you will need to replenish your muscle glycogen stores by drinking or eating carbohydrates. Glycogen is what fuels muscles to move. That is why Gatorade and PowerAde sponsor so many sporting events. I recall Gatorade being given out at the end of the New York City Marathon and PowerAde over at the Disney Marathon.

At the same time your muscles need to start repairing itself, so protein is needed to start the rebuilding process. Kara Goucher, Third Place Finisher of the 2009 ING New York City Marathon, said that her body would feel beat up after a training session. After her coach, Alberto Salazar suggested to include a protein drink did she start to recover faster

By adding protein to carbs, insulin facilitates the glucose uptake in the muscle and the conversion into glycogen, which helps absorb the protein to make repairs. In a study done by Dr. John Ivy at University of Texas, the 4:1 Carb to Protein Ratio should be taken within 15 minutes of finishing the workout for maximum performance and growth for the muscles up to 60 minutes. Afterwards, any benefits are lost.

The risk to your body by not rehydrating, getting enough carbs and protein is that you will be dehydrated, tired, have a weaker immune system, and damage to the muscles. Which in turn will make it much harder to recover and be ready for your next workout.

Some examples of the 4:1 Carb to Protein Ratio are

* Chocolate Milk, which will help rehydrate, has simple carbs and the right amount of protein, however does not include complex carbs, the protein most likely no be a high protein efficiency ratio, does not have the other vitamins for the body, and creatine
* Bagel and Peanut butter is a complex carb and protein combo, but it’s hard to gauge the ratio; in addition, peanut butter can be tough to digest.
* P90X Results and Recover Formula really prepares you for your next workout by including simple and complex carbohydrates, high protein efficiency ratio, antioxidant Vitamins C and E and a small amount of creatine to boost performance.

Keep a journal of what you fuel your body with post workout, and how you felt the next day, so that you find the right combination to perform to the best of your ability. Contact a nutritionist should you need more assistance in fine-tuning your nutrition.

On Feb. 1, 2011, news around the U.S. broke recapping the new guidelines for dietary consumption from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, which it modifies every five years. The move to a heavier plant-based diet is huge news considering the Food Pyramid, which has yet to be revised, has been heavy in grains and dairy for many years. Essentially, the USDA is recommending that 59% of your total daily calories come from vegetables and 42% from fruit, 15% from whole grains and 40% from fiber, which will happen easily if people adopt this way of eating.

Critics would argue that the dairy is too high at 52% and that there is little indication of where meat falls. The guidelines are not the Food Pyramid, but may help to shape it when that change becomes final. If anything, these updates are heading in the right direction.

In a nutshell, here are the recommendations:

* Enjoy your food, but eat less.
* Avoid over-sized portions.
* Make half your plate fruits and vegetables.
* Switch to fat-free or low-fat (1%) milk.
* Compare sodium in foods like soup, bread, and frozen meals – and choose the foods with lower numbers.
* Drink water instead of sugary drinks.

Are these guidelines perfect? Well, no, but everyone, without a doubt, can and will benefit from eating more fresh, raw, pesticide-free fruits and vegetables. Research is ongoing and shows exponential great health and vitality the more fruits and veggies a person eats. You can’t argue with the fruit and vegetable emphasis and here’s why:

According to new data from the Epic Study from Europe of 300,000 people in 8 different countries, those who eat at least 8 servings of fruits and veggies daily have a 22% lower risk of dying from ischemic heart disease than from people who have 3 or fewer servings daily. The study shows 4% reduction in risk of death for every portion of fruits and veggies over two per day.

Are you feeling inspired yet?

If not, read on because I can personally attest to a lecture I attended on January 28 by Dr. Paul Williams, a 20-year ER physician from Memphis, TN. Dr. Williams shared some astonishing facts about what antioxidants do to the body. (He also had some funny come-backs to excuses people use to thwart the idea that they need to take care of themselves.)

One such astonishing physiological process in the body is how LDL (low-density lipoprotein), or “bad” cholesterol, is simply harmless by itself. LDL carries cholesterol through the blood stream. Consider it a “boat” of cholesterol “love” pumping through the vessels with every beat.

However, because of stress, smoking, poor diet, which is devoid of antioxidants, increased activity without the proper nutrition to support it (picture a young athlete eating Little Debbies instead of an apple) and other situations that cause oxidative stress, your body’s reaction to its environment, to life and processing calories for energy causes sparks of energy that oxidize (like rust) the cells within it. This process is necessary and good in a small dosage. The problem is, too many of us are producing way more free radicals that bombard our internal cells and DNA, causing lots of harm, that leads to chronic inflammation and disease.

Now, back to our harmless LDL cholesterol. Here is this guy, minding his business (asking, “Why does everyone think I’m so bad?”), until he gets hit by a free-radical. Picture “Hagar the Horrible” crashing into it.

Once LDL is hit by free-radicals, it loses its stability and lipid peroxide is left as a byproduct, which is very damaging to the inner lining of the blood vessel walls (endothelium). The endothelium soaks up these lipid peroxide molecules and stores them within the lining walls of the blood vessels.

If too much LDL is circulating and too many free radicals continue to damage the LDL, the inner lining continues to soak up the lipid peroxide and increases the chance of rupture. This rupture is what causes many heart attacks and strokes, as the plaque that lines the inner walls become free-floating and can lodge in other places along the circulatory system.

Garlic is an essential flavoring ingredient in many cuisines, especially Asian, Mexican and Mediterranean. The fresh bulb is rich in a variety of potent sulfur-containing compounds such as allicin, ajoene and alliin. These are responsible for the characteristic pungent odor and stinking breath as well as its many health-giving properties.

The minced bulbs are best eaten raw or lightly cooked at around 70 degrees Celsius. Low temperature cooking triggers some chemical reactions to occur, resulting in the forming of a variety of beneficial sulfur derivatives. However, over-cooking under high heat renders the enzymes unable to react and form the health-giving sulfur compounds.

The minced raw bulb is best used about ten minutes after mincing, to allow time for the enzymatic reaction that converts alliin into allicin, the main health-giving sulfur compound of garlic.

These pungent components, together with vitamin C, are powerful antibacterial and antiviral agents that act against bacteria, viruses and microbes. Recent researches have proven that taking garlic everyday lessens the risk of catching a cold, or in the event of catching one, to hasten the recovery.

Colds and flu are highly infectious diseases and are especially prevalent during the cold winter months. Taking garlic soup, broth or tea or even garlic pills or tablets act as a healthy prevention against catching the flu. Taking garlic syrup throughout the day calms a sore throat and nagging cough, or try squeezing some garlic juice to the back of the sore throat, followed by bee propolis for quick relief. It is a good idea to drink a cup of warm garlic tea everyday during the cold winter months as a precaution against catching the flu and to boost the immune system.

Garlic is naturally rich in selenium whereas the level of selenium in other plants depend on the availability of the mineral in the soil. Selenium provides us with protection against cancer and toxic heavy metal damage, especially lead poisoning. One of our body’s powerful antioxidant enzymes in the liver that helps in detoxifying toxins, is the glutathione peroxidase. This particular enzyme needs selenium to function properly and it plays an important part in repairing and inhibiting the growth of cancer cells.

Grilling meat at high temperature may result in burnt or blackened parts, which are carcinogenic residues. Adding chopped garlic to the sauce or eating raw minced garlic together with the grilled meat, helps in reducing the toxic effects.

If seafood is farmed in contaminated water, it may be heavily contaminated with heavy metals such as lead and mercury. It is a good idea to use garlic as a seasoning when cooking these type of seafood, as garlic aids in detoxifying toxins.

Seaweeds are rich in iodine and selenium is required for the effective conversion of thyroid hormones, which play a part in regulating cell metabolism throughout the body. The thyroid gland needs to combine iodine to the amino acid tyrosine to synthesis these hormones. Thus seaweed is best cooked with garlic, a rich source of natural selenium, to help in the conversion. Have a salad of romaine lettuce, tossed with seaweed and minced garlic, flavored with garlic oil and vinegar, for a healthy, light meal.

Is chopping garlic and storing it in the refrigerator a good idea? The answer is ‘no’ as it is highly susceptible to mold infection. Unpeeled garlic is best kept at room temperature, in a cool, dry place, or in a beautiful garlic keeper easily bought online. Chopping or mincing only the required amount 10 minutes before using, is the best option.

Is sprouted garlic safe to consume? Yes, in fact, there are supplements using garlic sprouts for promoting good health, eliminating fatigue and improving intestinal and stomach health. A sprouted garlic bulb has less pungency in the bulb as some of the pungent sulfur compounds have moved up into the sprouts. This results in a much milder tasting bulb, which might be preferred by those who dislike the stronger pungent taste. Storing the fresh bulb in a cool dry place will delay sprouting.

Exercise alone can boost your metabolism by enhancing thermogenesis (heat production in the body), but this effect can be assisted by a well-formulated thermogenic nutritional supplement. Such and energy-boosting formula would ideally contain a variety of natural substances that support the activity of the thyroid gland (which regulates metabolism), increase the burning of fat, regulate blood sugar and insulin levels, and suppress appetite. Again, a local health food store that specializes in supplements should be able to help you find the right one your physician when you consult with him or her to starting the fitness regimen. Ingredients to look for in a thermogenic formula iodine, tyrosine, green tea extract, banaba, and bitter orange peel extract.

The mineral iodine and the amino acid tyrosine and the amino acid tyrosine are important thyroid regulators. Abnormalities of iodine metabolism, which can result in thyroid disease and obesity, can be prevented through ingestion of kelp, a whole food supplement that provides iodine to support the thyroid gland and balance metabolism. As a direct precursor to the thyroid hormone thyroxine, tyrosine is an important ingredient in weight loss, one that also helps regulate appetite.

Green tea extract has garnered lots of acclaim in recent years following studies that show its potential effect in enhancing metabolism and aiding fat oxidation. Studies also show that it can help control body weight by helping to reduce blood fats-cholesterol-as well as aiding in blood sugar balance.

Banana, in addition to being found in lean muscle mass formulas, may also help regulate blood sugar levels. That is why it’s often found in thermogenic formulas. Bitter orange and peel extract contains compounds that help stimulate metabolism, as does the South American herb mate, which also suppresses appetite. Other natural ingredients that may assist in weight loss include bamboo leaf extract and the natural brain chemical DMAE (short for dimethyl-amino-ethanol).
